Description

Objective:

The course objective is to introduce students to relational databases and structured query language (SQL). It provides the knowledge and skills necessary to explain relational databases and common SQL commands. Students will also be able to build a basic database, and learn to add, modify, and select data from the database.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define what a relational database is and contrast it to other database types (flat file, hierarchical)
  • Identify relational database management systems and install developer editions of database systems
  • Design a relational database, including schemas, entity, and perform normalization
  • Define SQL, explain different flavors of SQL (T-SQL, PL/SQL, Dynamic SQL, No SQL), create keys in SQL, and write basic SQL commands
  • Write commands to modify database table structure
  • Create joins to combine data across tables in a relational database
  • Create views and triggers using SQL
  • Create a database table, describe a schema in SQL and define SQL data types (character, numeric, text, date)
  • Write SQL commands to insert, retrieve, modify, and delete data in a database
  • Describe SQL joins
