Description

Objective:

To provide students with the second of a three part series on the history and contemporary status of Latin America and the Caribbean. Before the end of the century, people of Latin American and Caribbean origin will constitute the largest minority in the United States. Latin America and the Caribbean represent one on the United States' most important trading partners as well as a strategic resource. The Americas examines the varying economic and cultural differences that exist throughout Latin America and the Caribbean as well as the United State's relations with its hemispheric neighbors and with people of Latin American and Caribbean origin living in the U.S.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate an increased knowledge and understanding of the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Will be aware of the historic and contemporary economic, political, social, and cultural ties that link these counties both to themselves and the United States
  • Will be familiar with the fashion in which these hemispheric neighbors coexist with very different languages, histories, and cultural identities while within a single country those inhabitants must cope with issues of race, class, and ethnic identities
  • Have knowledge of the changing roles of women in the region both politically and economically as well as the diversity of religious beliefs and practices in the Americas
  • Will demonstrate knowledge of the transformation of vast numbers of Latin American and Caribbean natives from rural farmers through migration and urbanization
  • Will be aware of the changing roles of women as well as the impact that religion has had throughout the region
