Description

Objective:

The course objective is to explore policing techniques and tactics used to combat and prevent crime. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge and working skills involved in the art of interviewing and interrogating witnesses and suspects, and the relevant legal parameters that must be followed during field procedures.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the steps in the interview process
  • Describe how to successfully interview and interrogate witnesses using articles from the Internet
  • Identify the constitutional and legal considerations that must be made during a criminal interrogation
  • Differentiate an interview from an interrogation
  • Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to describe the personal qualities that affect the interview process
  • Compare the traditional interview method with the cognitive interview method
  • Describe interview approaches for special populations
  • Describe the use of the forensic hypnosis and cognitive interview methods
  • Using case studies, describe the techniques used by officers in obtaining a confession
  • Identify appropriate questions that can be used in purposeful interrogation
