Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance and improve students' proficiency level to solid 2+ or above in reading and listening and to enhance speaking and writing proficiency. Course materials cover a variety of FLO topics, including geography, culture, politics, economy, science and technology, and military, enabling the student to produce transcripts, summaries, and translations of authentic target language audio and text material. Students improve their structural, lexical, and socio-cultural competences, including knowledge and control of vocabulary, idioms, grammar forms, syntax, and sociocultural references.

Learning Outcomes:

  • transcribe and translate authentic listening passages at ILR 2+ or above level with 80% accuracy in spellings, grammar, idiomatic and colloquial expressions;
  • illustrate the main idea and some significant details from more complex, non-specialized passages at ILR 2+ or above level;
  • analyze structural and lexical components, including vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, grammar forms, and syntax in relevance to FLO topical areas;
  • evaluate the contextual and implied meaning of texts in relevance to FLO topical areas and debate the tone and nuance of the texts when given authentic ILR level 2+ or above aural and written text;
  • construct cohesive and coherent opinions when engaging in meaningful discourse using critical thinking skills and justify your stance;
  • compose logical and sound criticism and evaluation in written and spoken form by synthesizing information, messages, implications, and significance identified in authentic ILR Level 2+ or above texts.
