Description

Objective:

The goal and objective of this course is to familiarize the students with the Persian poetry and through it with the nooks and crannies of Persian language; understand the Persian language and culture better through Persian poetry. Each session consists of three main parts: description of the topic, reading the examples, and discussing the content of the poem.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify all major features in Persian poem and determine how to render them in English accordingly with 85% accuracy
  • Determine how best to deal with it in translation with 80% accuracy given an authentic level 2+ Persian poems, the use of dictionaries and 2 hour time-limit
  • Identify all the highlighted features covered in a poem and be able to provide an explanation for each poem, and answer questions on poems used in the text with 90% accuracy
  • Identify instances of metric structure, different types of poetry, and distinguish who is the prominent representative of each type

  • Formal requirement of Persian poetry, different types of poetry, discussion on the work of the most famous representatives of each type of poetry, poetry from the content point of view, different styles in Persian poetry, images in Persian poetry, the influence of Persian poetry on American Transcendentalists, and the influence of Persian poetry on 20th century American Poets
