Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance and strengthen the ILR level 2+ student's functional use of the language and move towards level 3 proficiency by stressing active language production and accuracy to cultivate a language analyst capable of excelling at more than passive tasks. The primary focus of the course include: listening and reading comprehension, grammar concepts, and cultural expertise. Speaking and writing are used to reinforce the proper use of lexical and grammatical forms and serve as an ongoing assessment/feedback tool for the instructor.

Learning Outcomes:

  • translate authentic ILR level 3 listening segment cuts that contains factual information, speaker’s opiniated utterance, attitude, emotion and logical justification with 80% accuracy in spelling, grammar, idiomatic and colloquial expressions;
  • illustrate the main idea and some significant details from more complex, non-specialized passages at ILR level 3;
  • analyze structural and lexical components, including vocabulary, proverbs, idiomatic expressions, grammar forms, and syntax related to FLO topical areas;
  • evaluate the contextual and implied meaning of ILR level 3 texts related to FLO topical areas, and debate the attitude and nuance of the texts to extract writer/speaker’s hidden intention;
  • construct cohesive and coherent opinion when engaging in meaningful discourse using critical thinking skills, and justify one’s own stance;
  • compose logical and sound criticism and evaluation in written and spoken form in ILR level 2+ by synthesizing information, implications, and significance identified
  • Rewrite and formulate high-context Korean cultural references found in ILR level 3 materials to empathize with Korean values, emotions, likes/dislikes in different contexts to further develop socio-cultural perspectives and intercultural competencies.
  • summarize authentic ILR level 3 reading texts and 2-3 minute long audio materials with 80% accuracy;
