Description

Objective:

The course objective is to increase students' global linguistic, sociolinguistic and intercultural competence in North Korean dialect and society. Students will improve their structural, lexical, and socio-cultural competences to include: knowledge and control of vocabulary, idioms, grammar forms, syntax, and socio-cultural references in North Korea. Comparisons with South Korean society will be drawn to assist students in better understanding North Korean society and vernacular.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze aural and written North Korean texts and evaluate contextual and implied meaning of texts in various topics
  • Synthesize information, messages, implications, and significance identified in texts and create their own opinions and criticisms
  • Research, analyze, and author an essay on North Korean Society
  • Compose a journalistic-style English translation of a 200 -300 word North Korean reading and listening texts at the 2+ level or higher
  • Compare and contrast the societal elements within both North and South Korea
  • Argue and debate in meaningful discourse using critical thinking skills
