Description

Objective:

The course objective is to train Arabic language students who are a minimum ILR (Interagency Language Roundtable) Level 2/2+ (ACTFL Advanced Mid/High) in Levantine dialect to understand higher-level Levantine voice and written material and to translate it into idiomatic English. The focus will be on improving the student's proficiency in Levantine dialect to an ILR Level 3 (ACTFL Superior). The course will cover all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Writing skills will be enhanced daily through daily transcription exercises and through written homework focusing on the topics of the day. For listening, web-based Levantine dialect material from live Levantine television programs, films, soap operas and other media. Speaking in the Levantine dialect will be expected at all times during the class. The course will emphasize the three Levantine sub-dialects: Syrian (Damascene), Lebanese and Jordanian/Palestinian as they are closely related and mutually intelligible.

Learning Outcomes:

  • At a ILR Level 3 (ACTFL Superior) level, students will be able to compare/contrast complex Levantine Arabic grammar with that of Modern Standard Arabic on authentic written Levantine Arabic passages
  • Estimate the meaning of unfamiliar words using context, word formation and background knowledge from authentic written Levantine Arabic passages
  • Render translations of authentic written Levantine Arabic passages into good, idiomatic English
  • Distinguish the essential elements of information (EEI) and magnifying details when given authentic aural Levantine Arabic passages
  • Produce a thorough gist after an initial listening of authentic aural Levantine Arabic passages
  • Summarize texts after listening 1-2 times to authentic aural Levantine Arabic passages
  • Compose verbatim transcripts of selected portions of authentic aural Levantine Arabic passages
  • Deliver a five-minute oral presentation in Levantine Arabic on a relevant cultural topic
  • Develop a written transcript of a five-minute oral presentation in Levantine Arabic on a relevant cultural topic
