The course objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of core concepts in health and human development. Emphasis is placed on health, wellness, and the mind/body connection; human development and relationships; substance use and abuse; fitness and nutrition; disease and disease prevention; safety, consumer awareness, and environmental concerns. Basic understanding of anabolic steroids, over the counter medications, dependency/addiction and societal effects are examined.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Evaluate how reproduction, sexuality, intimate relationships, aging, death and bereavement effect human development
  • List the components of physical fitness and nutrition, and their effects on the body and mind
  • Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to explain the connection between the mind and body in relation to health and wellness in general, and mental health and illness specifically
  • Apply knowledge of addiction and addictive behavior to human behavior and health
  • Identify diseases, disease prevention tactics, and risk factors for disease
  • And discuss human safety concerns including intentional injuries, violence, and environmental concerns
