Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide the managing officer with basic skills and tools needed to perform effectively as a leader in the fire service environment focusing on their department.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify services provided by a typical fire/emergency medical services (EMS) company (outputs), and resources needed to provide these services (inputs), and understand their interrelationship
  • Differentiate among the three decision-making styles and the five processes identified
  • Match appropriate decision making styles to given situations using the Vroom- Yetton-Jago Model
  • Cite the advantages and potential disadvantages of group decision-making
  • Describe the planning process, types of plans and their effect on the Company Officer (CO)
  • Describe the types, methods and barriers to effective communications
  • Describe advantages and disadvantages of individual and group problem solving
  • Describe problem solving methods and the steps involved in problem solving models
  • Develop goals and objectives needed for planning
  • Identify components of an action plan
