Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide members with both course work and service experience to gain awareness of the diversity of cultures and human behaviors and to enhance the members' skills in navigating and adapting effectively to new cultural contexts in communities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • increase awareness of personal culture and identity, the NCCC community and the communities in which they serve
  • understand how ally behavior can be effective on an interpersonal and institutional level and practice ally approaches to effectively address oppression and promote understanding in a respectful manner
  • explore the challenges and importance of effective cross-cultural communication
  • deepen understanding of ideological, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized oppression
  • explore the effect of past and current events on the local and national level and its impact on individuals and communities
  • recognize the messages participants have received about their own identity and the role that plays in society.
  • articulate core diversity issues including cultural assumptions about race, sex, gender, sexual identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability/disability, and other identities
