Description

Objective:

In AP Research, students develop the skills and discipline necessary to conduct independent research to produce and defend a scholarly academic thesis. This second course in the AP Capstone experience allows students to explore deeply an academic topic, problem, or issue of individual interest and through this inquiry, students design, plan, and conduct a year-long mentored, research-based investigation. The course culminates in an academic thesis paper of approximately 5,000 words and a presentation, performance, or exhibition with an oral defense.

Skills Measured:

AP Research requires candidates to demonstrate the following abilities: introduce and contextualize the research question and initial assumptions and/or hypotheses; review previous work in the field to synthesize information and a range of perspectives related to the research question (e.g., Literature Review); identify the gap in the current field of knowledge to be addressed; explain and provide justification for the chosen method, process, or approach; present the findings, evidence, results, or product; interpret the significance of the findings, results, or product; explores connections to original research question; discusses the implications and limitations of the research or creative work; reflect on the process and how this project could impact the field; discuss possible next steps and/or future directions; provide a complete list of sources cited and consulted in the appropriate disciplinary style; develop a presentation that reflects the depth of research and deliver it to an oral defense panel; and answer questions from a panel consisting of the AP Research teacher and two additional panel members. The skills measured include academic paper (75%) and presentation and oral defense (25%).
