ACE’s regional liaisons began sharing their projects across the country to demonstrate how institutions are applying and articulating ACE credit recommendations and other credit for prior learning (CPL) options within their institutions and state university systems.
In this quarterly issue, we highlight our ongoing efforts to increase CPL options for active military and veteran students and to educate administrators about successfully implementing CPL tools on campus for all students.
ACE's College and University Partnerships (CUP) recently hosted the following webinars:
- What is Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) and why should it be recognized? View Archive
- How do we build an effective credit for prior learning program at our institutions? View Archive
- Internal Marketing: Building Credit for Prior Learning Commitment and Engagement Across the Institution View Archive
The next webinar in the series is offered on June 16 and 18, 2015.

On the Road to Mapping Military Credits
Bridget Petzold, Regional Liaison – SOUTH
In line with CUP's “Mapping Project” which focuses on maps articulating military training to curriculum credit, Bridget Petzold was a presenter at the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) Prior Learning Assessment Conference. TCSG is currently building a mapping system for all of the technical colleges in Georgia. Petzold provided an overview of the ACE CREDIT evaluation process and instructed approximately 100 attendees, mostly registrars, from across the state on how to use the ACE Military Guide to create maps.
ACE's Military Mapping webinars, scheduled for June 16th and 18th, will provide a network of resources to articulate military training and occupations as well as provide options to fulfill competency gaps. Presenters will provide helpful tools, such as a guide to mapping, a map-building template and a process building template.
Expanding Military Credits for Veterans - Training for Success!
Patricia Brewer, Regional Liaison - MIDWEST
Patricia Brewer was a panel member for a webinar, "Credit Due: Increasing Veterans' Postsecondary Degree Attainment", presented on February 24th by the Council on State Governments. The webinar shared information on awarding credit for prior learning, assessment tools that can be used to award credit, and the benefit to our student veterans.
ACE will be leading teams in six regional sessions across Ohio in spring 2015 to facilitate training and occupations. This is a series of regional sessions to assist with the Ohio Board of Regents statewide initiative to articulate academic credit for military training and occupations. Moving the "Attainment Needle" with CPL Options
Christopher Johnson, Regional Liaison – WEST
Christopher Johnson will present at the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Conference on May 23-26. During this year's meeting, which will be held in Austin, Texas, Johnson's session "Moving the Attainment Needle with Prior Learning Assessment" will be one of 250 sessions presented during this professional development opportunity for faculty and higher education administrators. The session will highlight how various prior learning assessment options can assist institutions with elevating postsecondary completion rates. These tools are valuable in "increasing the attainment needle" for all students, including military and veterans, on campus.
