Description

Objective:

To provide theoretical and practical knowledge of the issues pertaining to Jewish day school education with a particular emphasis on understanding intra-school relationships, collaborating with the community and meeting the challenge of educating at-risk children.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Be able to distinguish among socialization, learning and education, apply theoretical knowledge of school - community interactions to balancing community needs with school goals
  • Be familiar with basic aspects of Day School administration and accountability, understand how the principles of group dynamics relate to classroom behavior and classroom management, be familiar with the challenges and methods pertaining to educating children at risk, utilize parent and community collaboration and informal education in the development of prevention programs
  • Detect early signs of psychological disorders and intervention options found within a school, and have an understanding of gender related issues in education, define professionalism and differentiate this concept from the related term occupation
  • In the context of accountability, critique existing approaches to measuring educational outcomes in Jewish education in general, and Day School education in particular
  • Identify the challenge inherent in defining the mission of the Day School, understand the principles of social system theory and functional analysis and its application to the educational institutions, describe the social system of the Day School and ho
  • Discuss the extent to which Day School teachers are professional and the implications of their response to Day School teacher recruitment, teaching as a career, and educational outcomes
