: To provide community outreach workers with an introduction to basic concepts of health and disease, wellness techniques, and communication skills.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand objectives of personal and community health programs and the role of community health representatives in health education, contracting, and reporting
  • Deliver health promotion programs using available resources and identify at-risk clients
  • Explain in nontechnical language information about family planning, health, and wellness
  • Introduce concepts and interventions of mental illness, alcoholism, chemical dependency, and disfunctional families
  • Effectively communicate health education information to individuals and groups and comprehend communications from others
  • Introduce concepts of disease prevention based on knowledge of diseases, anatomy, and functions of body systems that help clients seek to be healthy
  • Assist community members in understanding environmental health issues and maintaining a healthy environment
