Description

Objective:

The course objective is to allow each student to work independently to review relevant system safety and analysis literature in order to have a comprehensive view of system safety and how safety is integrated throughout all phases of the life cycle of a system or facility. Each student will acquire a practical knowledge of the relationship between engineering and management to optimize safety that contributes to accident prevention and provides a more safe system or facility through the identification of hazards and controls, hazard analysis, and risk management at the appropriate levels of authority. Each student will learn about the product improvement program and safety messaging for system modifications to address design shortcomings and reduce risk.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Interpret system safety definitions, scope, and principles
  • Recognize the effects of new technology and Department of Defense acquisition strategies on system safety
  • Explain the system safety process throughout all phases of the life cycle of a system or facility
  • Recognize the impact and contributions of the system safety process and principles on system development and fielding of a more safe system to the user throughout the life-cycle phases with a focus on accident prevention
  • Interpret the concept of hazards and controls in the system safety process for risk assessment and acceptance
  • Recognize the hazard analysis types and techniques and their application to the system life-cycle phases
  • Prepare system safety analyses of selected systems that identify hazards, controls, order of precedence, and risk assessment
  • Research appropriate system safety databases to identify product improvements, modifications and training aids
