Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide designated additional duty safety personnel the education and training necessary to manage an effective accident prevention program and to function as a member of the Commander's force protection team. The course produces the skills necessary to establish qualified Additional Duty Safety Officers (ADSO) for the Army, Army National Guard (ARNG) and US Army Reserve (USAR). Graduates will be assigned as company or battalion level ADSOs to manage the Army and ground safety programs within their respective units. They will also serve as the commander's primary advisor on all safety related matters, be able to detect and analyze unsafe conditions, and make appropriate recommendations to preserve combat power; conduct staff and unit training on safety topics; coordinate unit safety councils.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify risk and develop control measures for system defects using evaluations and survey data
  • Apply the system safety process and hazard mitigation procedures to Army systems and interpret Army Safety Messages for required safety actions
  • Prepare workplace hazard reports, when required, for garrison and/or tactical environments
  • Analyze pre-deployment and redeployment/reintegration operations

  • Apply explosive and range safety standards for the storage of ammunition and other explosives
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the ADSO's role in accident prevention
  • Develop the framework for a ground safety program that will be implemented in home units
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and regulations
  • Analyze tactical and non-tactical operations to identify hazards and develop controls to mitigate them
  • Demonstrate competent Army ground accident investigation and reporting techniques
  • Prescribe general safety precautions and risk mitigation measures necessary to minimize the possibility of accidents during range operations
  • Integrate safety requirements associated with a unit maintenance program, assess risk, and mitigate hazards within a maintenance facility
  • Conduct an inspection to identify and categorize maintenance facility housekeeping hazards and brief the owning organization of findings
  • Evaluate safety requirements in a tactical environment to identify hazards and develop mitigation measures to reduce risk associated with the hazards
