Description

Objective:

Satisfactory completion provides the student with knowledge of prominent changes in occupational safety and health. Including; technological changes; proliferation of health and safety legislation and corresponding regulation; ethics and corporate responsibilities; cost associated with product safety and litigation.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the role of the health and safety professional regarding industrial hygiene and analysis OSHA requirements relating to industrial hygiene
  • Explore and explain the significance of the Code of Hammurabi in terms of the occupational health and safety movement
  • Research the leading causes of death in the United States and analyze the socio-economic impact on the workforce and industry
  • Describe and compare the theories of accident causation, including the Domino Theory, the Human Factors Theory, Accident/Incident Theory, Epidemiological Theory, Systems Theory, and the Combination Theory
  • In the rational for the OSH Act. and analyze the original intent compared to its current application
  • Rationalize the concept of safeguarding and engineering for safety and research the effects of engineering controls on workplace injury and illness rates
  • Define zero potential and explain the relationship between zero potential and grounding
  • Explain the differences between flash point, fire point, and auto-ignition
  • Establish the legal framework for providing health and safety training and an organization's safety policy
