Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enable students to acquire aviation knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) necessary to administer safety program at company and battalion levels. The student will also serve as the commander's primary advisor on all safety matters; detect and analyze unsafe conditions; make appropriate recommendations to the command to preserve combat power; conduct staff and unit training on safety topics; coordinate a unit safety council; and investigate Army accidents, determine root cause, and develop recommendations to prevent future occurrences. The student will accomplish these goals through exams, out briefs, and presentations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and regulations
  • Apply the system safety process and hazard mitigation procedures to Army systems and interpret Army Safety Messages for required safety actions
  • Prepare workplace hazard reports, when required, for garrison and/or tactical environments
  • Conduct an inspection to identify and categorize maintenance facility housekeeping hazards and brief the owning organization of findings
  • Evaluate safety requirements in a tactical environment to identify hazards and develop mitigation measures to reduce risk associated with the hazards
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the ASO's role in accident prevention
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of standards and regulations
  • Develop the framework for an aviation safety program that will be implemented in home units
  • Identify risk and develop control measures for system defects using evaluations and survey data
  • Analyze tactical and non-tactical operations to identify hazards and develop controls to mitigate them
  • Demonstrate competent Army accident investigation and reporting techniques
  • Integrate safety requirements associated with a unit maintenance program, assess risk, and mitigate hazards within a maintenance facility
