Description

Objective:

The course objective is to educate law enforcement and non-commissioned personnel to crime scene investigation. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to participate in locating, documenting, and recovering human skeletal remains.

Learning Outcomes:

  • relate the types of evidence and/or information that can be gleaned from skeletal remains
  • discuss the various bones of the human skeleton and determine whether remains are human or animal in origin
  • describe how the forensic anthropologist derives a biological profile from skeletal remains
  • discuss the various techniques employed in locating a burial or surface scatter site
  • discuss the recovery of outdoor scattered and buried human remains
  • explain the stages and taphonomic agents of human decomposition
  • explain the process for documenting a death scene using scientific photography and mapping methods and practice using total station and Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment to collect points
  • demonstrate the ability to locate and properly document scattered surface and buried human skeletal remains
