Description

Objective:

The course objective is to give students a closer in-depth look at a variety of psychological disorders, including anxiety, psychotic, dysphoric and sleep disorders. Students will be able to identify disorders from symptoms, connect disorders with treatments, and understand the legal, ethical, and societal issues in abnormal psychology.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Evaluate the manifestation of depression, discriminate between unipolar and bipolar instances, and develop coping strategies.
  • Compare phobias and consider their prevalence in relation to anxiety disorders.
  • Differentiate among symptoms that characterize the schizophrenias and apply criteria used in diagnosis.
  • Distinguish addiction from habit, identify stages of addiction and techniques for screening and diagnosis, and differentiate among substance related disorders.
  • Assess and compare organic mental disorders due to aging, such as Alzheimer's and dementia, and those attributed to physical damage to the brain.
  • Summarize techniques employed in the assessment, evaluation and treatment of psychological disorders, taking into account the challenges involved.
  • Analyze and classify abnormal behavior, stress and anxiety, personality disorders, substance abuse disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and behavioral disorders of children.
