Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide an overview of the scientific study of human society and social behavior. Students will critically examine a range of social phenomena, including family, education, religion, race, gender, health, and social stratification, through the lens of various sociological theories and the sociological imagination, which connects personal experiences to broader social and historical forces. This course also focuses on key concepts such as culture, socialization, social structure, and social change and explores how social institutions impact society. Through this exploration, students will gain a deeper understanding of how sociology applies to everyday life and the complexities of social institutions and inequalities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the sociological imagination, theoretical frameworks of sociology, and key events in the sociological timeline
  • Explain the scientific method and ethical considerations in research, differentiating between qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Define culture and its elements, then explain its evolutionary process over time
