Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide students with the skill and knowledge necessary to meet the basic cargo handling and storage requirements at the operational level as part of the training for the officer in charge of the navigational watch.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Use cargo plans and tables or diagrams of stability and trim data to calculate the ship's initial stability, drafts, and trim
  • Determine ship stress using data or calculation equipment
  • Understand safety precautions used prior to entering enclosed or potentially contaminated spaces
  • Supervise the dunnaging of holds using ship's cargo gear to prevent damage to the cargo or vessel
  • Understand the piping and pumping arrangements of tankers
  • Identify dangerous or hazardous cargo and know the precautions necessary for safe loading, carriage, and discharge
