Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide students with the knowledge and application skills to meet basic ship handling and steering control standards required for officers in charge of the navigational watch.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of steering control systems of sea going vessels and the operational procedures and change-over from manual to automatic controls
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of wind and currents, the effects of shallow water, and proper procedures for anchoring and mooring
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the procedures for adjusting controls for optimum performance, and the effects of deadweight, draught, trim, speed, and under keel clearance on turning circles and stopping distance
