Objective:

The course objective is to introduce communication principles, common communication practices, and a selection of theories to better understand the communication transactions that most people experience in everyday life.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define the major components of the human communication process
  • Recognize the impact of diversity and culture on interpersonal communication and group communication
  • Identify relationship development personally and professionally
  • Explain the role of critical and active listening in various communication climates
  • Identify and apply communication theories
  • Identify competencies in interpersonal, small group, and organizational settings
  • List the components of conflict, and identify strategies for conflict management
  • Explain impression management both in formal and informal settings
  • List the ethical responsibilities of communicators in a diverse society

  • Foundations of human communication including definitions, verbal communication, nonverbal communication, perception and impression management, ethics in communication, intercultural communication, communication theory, rhetorical criticism, and communication and gender
  • Interpersonal communication including interpersonal communication theories, interpersonal communication skills, listening, and analysis of communication context
  • Group communication including group communication theories, conflict management, and small group communication in action
  • Organizational communication including organizational communication theories, interpersonal versus intrapersonal communication, and business communication
  • Mass communication including theories of mass communication, mass media, media literacy, trends and ethics in mass media
