Description

Objective:

To teach students the interpretation of echocardiography and patterns for normal and pathological states of the left ventricle, pulmonic and tricuspid valves, as well as interventional echocardiography.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate M-mode and 2D measurements of the left ventricle
  • Calculate volume measurements of the left ventricle
  • Evaluate wall motion of the left ventricle
  • Demonstrate left atrial measurements
  • Identify and explain the mechanisms of various types of prosthetic valve replacements
  • List indications for transesophageal (TEE) examination
  • Describe patient preparation for TEE exams
  • Identify the anatomy demonstrated on TEE views
  • Demonstrate patient positioning for arterial examinations
  • Demonstrate proper use of equipment controls when scanning
  • Define and use related medical terminology
  • Describe pathology that may affect the left ventricle
  • Describe the information that can be obtained from left ventricular measurements
  • Calculate left ventricular stroke volume and ejection fraction
  • Describe techniques for evaluating left ventricular diastolic disease
  • Identify valve replacements on echocardiograms
  • Describe arterial pathologies of the upper and lower extremity
  • List indications for arterial ultrasound examinations
  • Perform carotid arterial examinations
