Description

Objective:

To introduce the structure and use of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9-CM) coding principles.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Determine how ICD-9-CM is used and identify characteristics of Volumes 1, 2 and 3 formats
  • Apply principles of law and ethics of coding
  • Explain and list the purposes of ICD-9-CM and apply coding convention
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the coding rules and regulations and apply HCFA diagnostic coding requirements for physician billing
  • Understand and explain the principles of reporting and choosing DRG's
  • Define the role of the Health Information Specialist in RBRVS, APG, Medicare, Medicaid and Managed Care Organizations
