Objective:

To introduce students to medical coding and insurance reimbursement systems.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Complete a universal claim form
  • Code a procedure and a diagnosis on the claim form for proper processing by insurance companies
  • Obtain information from the patient needed to file claims, read an insurance card accurately
  • Explain simple facts about health insurance to patients and their families
  • Contact an insurance company for benefit and coverage information
  • Pre-certify and preauthorize insurance benefits
  • Find needed information in the chart to properly file health insurance claims
  • Differentiate between claim form requirements for Medicare, Medicaid, Champus and Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans
