Description

Objective:

The course objective is for students learn how ethical theories have changed as the world of business has changed throughout history. Students understand how to identify the various stakeholders in a business and how to weigh their importance in making decisions; consider how corporate social responsibility (CSR) is now as important as profits in how businesses are run and how they are evaluated by investors; and weigh the pros and cons of environmental policy, social influence, and internal governance (ESG) scores to rate companies. Finally, students view ethics in the context of recent events like the 2020 pandemic, the rise of artificial intelligence, and the shift to remote work and a gig economy in the 21st Century. Throughout this course, students practice making ethical decisions that align with ethical theories, and follow a process that not only makes decisions easier to make but also easier to defend.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand ethical theories and determine what values will guide you and your career
  • Understand and express responsibilities to staff, impact of culture on business, changing norms, ethical conflicts, and fields with special ethical codes and legal requirements (e.g. medicine, education, journalism, advertising, etc.)
