Description

Objective:

The course objective is for students to understand how the body works, how to troubleshoot based on physiological considerations, how to intelligently discuss a host of nutritional issues, and how to convince clients that they have a deep knowledge of the subjects with which they're helping them.

Learning Outcomes:

  • define key terms and concepts in nutrition science, physiology, and coaching (e.g., relative energy deficiency in sports [RED-S], mitochondria, growth mindset, etc.)
  • identify key anatomical structures involved in cellular function and metabolism, energy transfer and regulation, major body systems and tissues (e.g. nervous system, gastrointestinal system
  • adipose tissue), and describe their general roles in the body (e.g. digestion and absorption, control of movement, etc.)
  • explain the principles of good nutrition and effective coaching, including evidence-based practice (EBP)
  • explain the biophysiological and deep health approaches, giving examples of how "health" might look in each of the six specific dimensions (e.g., physical health, mental health, etc.)
  • explain the basic biochemistry of nutrition, summarizing what each macronutrient contributes to overall health, function, and performance
  • understand and abide by scope of practice and professional and ethical obligations
  • apply the goals-skills-practices-actions (GSPA) model and the PN 6-step coaching process to work through a range of case studies, proposing solutions tailored to specific client scenarios, as well as client-level needs, and nutritional programming and ongoing progress
  • evaluate client progress using agreed-upon metrics, and judge the success of a given course of action
  • evaluate and make recommendations about any proposed dietary strategies a client may be considering or doing, and suggest alternatives as needed
  • create individual behavior-based action plans on client criteria, such as goals, needs, knowledge, and abilities
