Description

Objective:

To provide students with the first of a three part series of an introductory level art Course. History of Western Art examines works of art that have come to define the Western visual tradition. The Course will examine Western art against the backdrop of its time. The students will be acquainted with the various ways of looking at the great art works of Western civilization so that they have the intellectual tools to enable them to understand these monuments. Students will also come to understand the Western philosophical traditions that link the present with the past, and how these have affected the development of the visual arts over the millennia.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the works of art that are considered to represent the greatest achievements of Western civilization and that define the Western visual tradition
  • Study the art and architecture produced in Western Europe from around 400 A.D. until about 1350 B.C. during which time the Roman visual tradition was displaced by first the Romanesque then the Gothic styles
  • Distinguish the various styles and the Western visual tradition, appreciate the challenges of form and technique in the various mediums, and understand works of art in relation to the societies in which they were created
  • Develop an awareness of the historical changes that transform concepts of art, artists, and patronage in each period
  • Study the roots of Western civilization and the origins of humanism through the art and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome
