Description

Objective:

The third of this three part series will provide the student with a two-part discussion around hallucinogens, taking a look at the social context of the drugs and will further differentiate which chemicals are capable of producing hallucinogenic experiences. A two part series on marijuana is also included in this course. The series will identify why most classify marijuana as separate from other drugs, review the behavioral effects of marijuana, the medical interest in it, and concerns that have been raised regarding its use; will explore steroid use, the historical use by athletes, and concerns over steroid use; and will discuss some of the features of substance abuse treatment including its' effectiveness and improvement with regard to the system.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss the interest in hallucinogens from both a recreational and psychiatric perspective
  • Distinguish different kinds of hallucinogens
  • As a result of the two-part series on marijuana, the student will be able to explain why marijuana is classified separately, the effects of marijuana on behavior and task performance as well as social attitudes toward marijuana
  • Better understand steroids with regard to their uses and dangerous effects
