Description

Objective:

The second of this three part series is designed to provide students with knowledge around the uses and effects of depressants. The course will explore aspects of mental illness and its relationship to substance abuse; will focus on alcohol, the pharmacology of alcohol and how alcohol effects society; will explore nicotine, the pharmacology of nicotine, and concerns related to its' use; will provide insight into products that contain caffeine, the characteristics of, and effects of caffeine; will discuss over-the counter drugs and the properties of these types of drugs; and will examine many aspects of narcotics use and abuse.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the medical model approach to mental illness
  • Explain the basic pharmacology of alcohol
  • Discuss a number of different aspects around caffeine use including the pharmacokinetic effects and concerns related to use
  • Have better insite into over-the-counter drugs including what they are, their uses and their misuses, and the effects they can have
  • Begin to discuss a number of different topics with regard to narcotic use
  • Gain an understanding into the effects that alcohol use has on society
  • Develop insight into factors involved with both tobacco and nicotine including, concerns with their use, the pharmacology and nicotine addiction
