Description

Objective:

To provide students with the second of a two part comprehensive overview of multiculturalism; provide examples for culturally sensitive approaches with regard to the concerns of specific groups of women; educate the student on the impact sexual abuse and domestic violence on women who are dealing with substance abuse problems; examines the impact of gender-role socialization on men; and summarize some of the concerns and differences with regard to alcoholism in relationship to the elderly population.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the importance of family healing and connectedness in the context of a Native-American community
  • Identify gender-role socialization roles and the impact they have on men's lives including that should be addressed in recovery
  • Describe/identify the stages of gay/lesbian identity formation
  • Differentiate between assessment methods appropriate for elderly clients and for members of the general population
  • Identify the impact of sexual abuse and domestic violence on women who suffer from substance abuse and ways treatment programs can be responsive to these issues
