Description

Objective:

To provide students with the first of a two part comprehensive overview of multiculturalism. The course will provide awareness into the importance of the need to understand multiculturalism and of how the student can become multiculturally competent in their lives. The course also examines how oppression affects everyone and suggests ideas for making a difference. Finally, the course makes application of multicultural concepts to a variety of addiction related issues.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic value differences that might affect various cultural groups
  • Understand the differences between Asian-American and European-American value systems
  • Recognize how multicultural factors affect each person
  • Define oppression and describe the processes in learning and unlearning oppression
  • Develop an awareness of how his/her own worldview affects his/her perception of other people
  • Begin to develop interactive strategies that are appropriate for dealing with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds and identities
