Description

Objective:

To provide students with the first of a three part of an introductory level cultural anthropology Course. The Course will embrace cultures from all continents, highlighting major lifestyles, and illustrating human adaptation to environment from the beginnings of the human species to the present.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Familiar with the fundamental similarities of all members of the human race and the wide range of adaptations toward the common goal of survival
  • Will recognize the diversity of the cultures that have evolved, flourished, and in some instances, died in ages past and present and how the results of one culture's inability to adapt, can affect us all
  • Will be familiar with ethnographic study and some of the ethical issues inherent in participant-observation
  • Will understand the role language and communication within a culture and the influences of culture on individual personalities
  • Have knowledge subsistence patterns, from food foraging to food producing as well as various features of food producing societies
