Description

Objective:

To provide students with the second of a two part series on the history and events that have shaped the Asia-Pacific region over the last 150 years. The Course will enable students to interpret contemporary Asian developments with reference to past traditions, compare and contrast changes in one part of the region with another. The Course will encourage students to appreciate the diversity and dynamism of Pacific Asia and the contributions each country has made to its development and to understand the extent to which Asia has not simply 'reacted' to the West, but has interacted with it. The Course will introduce research the concept that the United States is part of an interdependent, Pacific international community and will study the diverse physical, cultural, political, and economic geography of Pacific Asia and the Pacific Basin.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Will be familiar with contemporary democratic developments in Pacific Asian capitalist states and the factors that condition the nature and pace of democratic reform in Asia
  • Will be aware of the American Asian relationship as it has changed since the nineteenth century as well as China's modernization efforts since 1949
  • Will be able to compare and contrast the causes and results of the revolutionary movements within two of the Southeast Asia countries, Indonesia and Vietnam and how Soviet-American dealings in the region affected it
  • Demonstrate an increased knowledge and understanding of Japan's economic rise post WWII and the dilemmas and questions that arose from it and how development outside Japan compares
  • Have knowledge of the economic challenges that confront Pacific Asian nations in the future and the possible leaders among these nations
