Description

Objective:

The course objective is to establish the foundation necessary to understand strategic business management in today's economy. Students will integrate knowledge from this course with skills acquired in previous courses to make sound management decisions.

Learning Outcomes:

  • List the five questions to ask when examining a company's resources and competitive position
  • List the five generic competitive strategies
  • Explain and provide examples for supplemental strategies
  • Define what motivating factors might lead a firm to expand into or choose to compete in foreign markets
  • Discuss a variety of conditions that require tailoring of a strategy to fit specific industries and company situations, including diversification
  • Address ethical and social responsibility considerations, including the three categories of management morality
  • Describe the framework for executing strategy
  • Explain the importance of selective staffing and building core competencies and competitive capabilities to successfully execute strategy
  • Define which resources are essential for successful strategy execution
  • Discuss best practices, total quality management (TQM), Six Sigma, business-process reengineering, benchmarking, and other continuous improvement techniques
