Description

Objective:

This course objective is to address one of the most important components of every business operation - financial decision making. All business decisions have some financial implications, either directly or indirectly. Many of the financial concepts addressed in this course arise and may be applied to your personal financial and economic decisions. It is very important, therefore, to develop a broad, basic understanding of the study of finance and corporate finance.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the main components of a balance sheet
  • Apply the basic equations used to calculate a firm's working capital and cash flow
  • Read and interpret basic balance sheets and income statements
  • Calculate capital gains, losses, and overall returns in simple stock transactions
  • Define a variety of risk components and explain how they affect investment returns
  • Describe the importance of diversification in an investment portfolio
  • Discuss the concept of financial leverage
  • Define the basic types of corporate bankruptcy proceedings
  • Explain how options, employee stock options, warrants, and convertible bonds work
  • Calculate amortization schedules, cash flows, cost of capital, depreciation and expense schedules, and after-tax cash outflows.
  • Calculate present values and future values
  • Define what a bond is and discuss the different types of bonds
  • Explain the differences between common stocks and preferred stocks
  • Discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of the various methods for analyzing investments
  • Calculate the break-even point for a project
  • Describe how investment portfolios are assembled and weighted
  • Explain the debt and equity components of a firm's capital structure
