Description

Objective:

The course objective is to inform and train communities on the impact of natural hazards on buildings and related infrastructure, as well as provide recommendations for mitigating the effects in future disasters. The workshop focuses on the assessment procedures used to collect and analyze data and on developing recommendations for changes to regulations, buildings codes and referenced standards, and other doctrine and policy at various levels to mitigate future disaster impacts. The workshop will include use of appropriate guest speakers and assessment of participant understanding through use of graded case study analysis activities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify effective mitigation measures to reduce damage from flood and wind hazard
  • Apply lessons learned from Mitigation Assessment Teams to mitigation projects, under the Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) programs and Public Assistance (PA) purviews
  • Prepare state, local community, tribal, and territorial officials to either advocate for or implement more hazard-resistant building codes, standards, and ordinances to reduce future losses from natural hazards
