Description

Objective:

The course objective is to provide Emergency Management (EM) leaders with skills critical to performing leadership responsibilities such as program management oversight, effective communication, research resources, applicable laws, policy considerations, collaboration and strategic thinking. The course is designed to provide participants with the skills to lead emergency management programs and will be essential to building the foundation for collaboration by bringing EM leaders together to share their experiences and establish a network.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Relate course objectives to units in the course schedule and identify course materials and describe how they will be used during the course.
  • Describe the leadership styles relevant to EM and use adaptive leadership relative to varying EM situations and contexts.
  • Define risk and crisis communications, describe the role of the PIO in emergency management, and apply spokesperson skills to an emergency scenario.
  • Describe the importance of vision and mission statements to an EM organization, define the relationship between vision and mission statements, and identify the components of well-written vision and mission statements.
  • Define strategic thinking, problem solving, and decision making; describe the relationship among them; and describe the importance of strategic thinking, problem solving, and decision making to the EM Leader.
  • List the research paper sections, identify the requirements for successful completion of the research paper, describe criteria for selecting the problem or topic to be addressed, explain the difference between qualitative and quantitative research, list the steps of the scientific method, and list the different types of research designs.
  • Apply EM leadership concepts to a case study.
