Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance and improve the reading and listening skills of an intermediate-level Spanish language analyst by reinforcing grammatical concepts and reading/ listening comprehension skills, as well as strengthening the student's ability to transcribe and translate authentic intermediate and advanced texts into idiomatic English. This is done through exposure to a variety of aural and graphic materials on current topics of importance in Latin American countries, with an emphasis on materials that will expand the student's awareness of political, cultural, and social issues. Speaking and writing skills are strengthened through discussions, debates, essays, and analysis of ILR (Interagency Language Roundtable) Level 3+/4* (ACTFL post-Superior)

  • analyze language idiosyncrasies and variations
  • recognize cultural expressions and compare functional relationships among lexemes
  • compare and contrast the different linguistic styles and registers of regional dialects
  • distinguish Latin American dialects and categorize them as rural or urban
  • summarize an authentic Spanish text's main idea and the author's supporting arguments
  • compare cultural differences between Colombia and Mexico
  • defend an opinion on a Latin American social or political issue, in Spanish, by creating a detailed argument including supporting facts
  • interpret non-standard dialects, language ambiguities, and upper-level discourse
  • evaluate the significance of cultural elements that are intrinsically linked to topics such as terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, immigration and corruption
