Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance and strengthen the ILR level 3 student's functional use of the language by stressing active language production and accuracy to cultivate a language analyst capable of excelling at more than passive tasks. Research has repeatedly proven that active use of a skill greatly enhances learning and retention (i.e., synthesis and production of the language instead of mere comprehension). The primary objectives of the course include: listening and reading comprehension, transcription, translation, grammar concepts, and cultural expertise. Speaking and writing are used to reinforce the proper use of lexical and grammatical forms and serve as an ongoing assessment/feedback tool for the instructor.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Deduce the meaning of new words and idioms, using situational and background knowledge
  • Explain the meaning of idiomatic expressions, figurative usages, and accompanying nuances
  • Interpret areas of text where it is necessary to read 'between/beyond the lines' to understand the full ramifications of the text in its wider cultural, political or social environment and follow unpredictable turns of thought
  • Analyze the passage and assess the main idea of the text
  • Demonstrate comprehension of essential elements of information (such as answer content questions, summarize, completing a chart)
  • Detect challenging grammatical, syntactic, and discourse features (such as complex sentences and colloquial syntactic structures) and explain their function
  • Distinguish fact from opinion, providing justification from text
