Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance and strengthen the ILR Level 3 (General Professional Proficiency) student's functional use of the language by stressing active language production and accuracy to cultivate a language analyst capable of excelling at more than passive tasks. The primary objectives of the course include: listening and reading comprehension, transcription, translation, grammar fundamentals, and cultural awareness. Speaking and writing will be used to help reinforce acquisition of lexical and grammatical skills and as an ongoing assessment. The course curriculum contains a variety of authentic language materials focused on the Final Learning Objectives (FLO) content areas (military and security, economy and politics, science and technology, culture and society, and geography including physical, political, and economic).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify and describe main ideas of reading and listening passages without the use of working aids
  • Demonstrate comprehension of general facts and salient details by answering questions or summarizing in English
  • Interpret the meaning of unfamiliar words using context, roots and background knowledge - without the use of working aids
  • Complete fill in the blank examples by restoring endings, pronouns, etc. or provide correct forms of selected items to reproduce coherent, grammatically correct text
  • Analyze reading and listening passages and identify correct answers to general content questions
  • Identify specified grammatical forms and parts of speech, e.g. pronouns, gender, numbers, verb tenses, etc., without the use of working aids
  • Summarize specified portions or entire audio passages without the use of working aids
  • Create transcriptions and translations of excerpts or entire audio passages with controlled use of working aids
