Description

Objective:

The course objective is to introduce and/or enhance the student's understanding of basic Korean language and culture. For language learning, the primary objectives of the course include: learning Hangul (the Korean alphabet), elementary Korean grammar, basic differences between North Korean and South Korean language and usage, and basic practical Korean phrases. Guided speaking and writing are used to reinforce the proper use of the language and serve as an ongoing assessment/feedback tool for the instructor. Explanations of Korean culture in general are incorporated to provide context for learned language material.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Use basic Korean phrases in speech to communicate basic needs or desires in practical situations (i.e., at a restaurant)
  • Recognize some distinctive viewpoints of Korean language and culture
  • Demonstrate targeted knowledge about one topic of their choosing related to Korean culture, via the research, production, and presentation of the course final project.
  • Read Korean words in Hangul script, in various fonts
