Description

Objective:

The course objective is to enhance students' higher level reading comprehension by exploring level 3/3+ authentic Chinese editorials/commentaries on a variety of topics such as environment, culture, society, medicine, diplomacy, economics, and technology. Students will be able to analyze an editorial and answer questions about the writer's intent, tone, and organization of the text by providing details and justification for their answers. In addition, students will gain a deeper understanding of contemporary China.

Learning Outcomes:

  • interpret author's intent and detect author's tone through discourse analysis (e.g. identifying and analyzing rhetorical devices)
  • identify and critique statements that carry loaded language
  • formulate an outline to explore the logic in the author's argument
  • evaluate sociocultural components in the editorial using critical thinking skills
  • analyze written texts and evaluate contextual and implied meaning of texts in relevance to a variety of topics
  • integrate information learned in the lesson by completing pedagogical and real life tasks
  • produce an accurate, detailed summary of authentic Chinese editorials/commentaries at level 3 or higher with 85% accuracy
