Description

Objective:

The course objective is to explore the scientific method and foundational chemistry facts that will assist students in the further study of Biology. Cell structure and cellular processes, DNA, photosynthesis, and other cellular activities are covered. Students will also explore the ecosystems and the biodiversity of the earth. In addition, students discuss matter and energy, the carbon cycle, organ systems and human impacts on the different ecosystems. Throughout the course, students will be asked to demonstrate critical thinking, literacy, and writing skills through scientific inquiry.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the carbon cycle, including the role photosynthesis and cellular respiration in the carbon cycle.
  • Explain the basic structure of DNA, including DNA function and the role of DNA in genetics.
  • Discuss biodiversity and how humans impact biodiversity.
  • Define Biology and the importance of studying Biology.
  • Describe characteristics and functions of animal and plant cells.
  • Discuss the impact humans and invasive species have on the ecosystem.
  • Describe the law of conservation of energy and matter, providing examples of nutrient cycling and energy flow.
  • Apply Punnett squares to find out the possible outcomes and probability of certain traits.
  • Explain the concept of natural selection and Charles Darwin’s role in the study of evolution.
  • Explain adaptations, including different types and how they can lead to new species.
