Description

Objective:

The course objective is to develop embalming skills. Embalming procedures, embalming products, special embalming procedures for infants, and special cases are explored. Outside preparation includes review of class notes, reading assignments, and studying for exams.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze the standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration with respect to the embalming lab, funeral home, and its employees (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Exhibit the ability to work on a team and assume roles of initiator and facilitator when appropriate (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Demonstrate the basic steps involved in the embalming process for the autopsied, un-autopsied, donor and infant cases (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Outline the anatomical guides and limits and linear guides for the various vessels raised in the lab (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Demonstrate various sutures and their appropriate applications (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Analyze and perform restorative and auxiliary treatments to enhance the embalming process (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Compare and contrast medical devices with respect to their purpose, appropriate removal, and influence on embalming and restorative art (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Evaluate dressing and casketing procedures for men, women and infants (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Exhibit the use of case analysis when determining fluid selection and embalming procedures (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Demonstrate how the embalming machine pressures and rate of flow are achieved and their significance (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
  • Differentiate embalming instruments with respect to name and appropriate usage (ABFSE Standard 6.3.1.f)
