Description

Objective:

The course objective is to examine the occupational therapy process in relation to persons with physical disabilities occurring at varied points across the life span.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define and explain the roles and responsibilities of the occupational therapy assistant and the occupational therapist in all stages of the occupational therapy process, emphasizing consideration of team collaboration, cultural, clinical, and ethical reasoning
  • Consider and discuss how environment and context can exacerbate or minimize the effects of physical disabilities
  • Describe and demonstrate approaches to educating clients, families, and significant others to support the therapy process and to promote safety, wellness, and participation in occupation
  • Apply and carry out the Occupational Performance Model in relation to occupational therapy and physical challenges
  • Teach and present professional information to peers
  • Articulate professional competencies needed by the occupational therapy assistant for participating and collaborating in the delivery of occupational therapy services to adults with physical disabilities
  • Describe and explain the pathology of selected physical conditions
  • Explain how cultural factors influence perceptions of disorders and conditions
  • In collaboration with the occupational therapist discuss the discharge planning process and/or recommend the termination of services
  • Correctly describe and demonstrate the use of screening tools, observations, interviews, assessments, and consultation with other health professionals appropriate to the role of the occupational therapy assistant
  • Demonstrate physical transfer techniques, wheelchair management, and use of mobility devices
  • Apply principles of activity analysis (identifying activity demands, grading, adapting, modifying) to the use of purposeful activity and occupation-based tasks for effective therapeutic intervention
  • Use professional literature and resources to select evidence-based materials that can assist in professional decision making for any step of the occupational therapy process
  • Generate therapeutic goals appropriate to age and life roles
  • Integrate all course material to fieldwork experiences to strengthen the ties between didactic and fieldwork education
  • Demonstrate professional behaviors in classroom and laboratory settings
