Description

Objective:

The course objective is to teach students to plan and implement nursing care to obstetrical patients and newborns. Students will attend clinical practicums at an affiliated hospital, laboratory, and/or clinical site assisting and performing actual maternal/child health nursing procedures. Outside preparation activities include web-based ATI (Assessment Technologies Institute) nurse logic, PN learning systems and practice assessments, and completion of workbook exercises and study guides.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Perform a complete postpartum assessment in accordance with patient centered care
  • Evaluate outcomes of nursing interventions that utilizes evidence based practice, safety and continued quality improvement
  • Educate patient in promotion of patient centered health care activities: sitz bath, perineal aids, breast care, bladder/bowel elimination, infection control, and woman's health care
  • Implement patient centered nursing measures to provide safe newborn care in such areas of: bathing, cord care, circumcision care, feeding, vital signs, and thermal regulation
  • Document appropriate information in nurse's progress notes as well as use of current informatics in the clinical setting
  • Report patient's progress to instructor and nursing staff focused on teamwork and collaboration as needed at the end of the clinical day
  • Observe in the patient centered care in a vaginal delivery
  • Observe patient centered procedures such as a circumcision with focus on safety and collaboration
  • Develop a nursing care plan and/or concept map incorporating evidence practice and continued quality of care that meets the needs of the newly formed-childbearing family as well as the newborn's adaptation to the extra uterine environment
  • Perform a complete newborn assessment in accordance with patient centered care
  • Implement nursing measures in the clinical care of the in-patient antepartum and/or postpartum client/family that utilizes evidence based practice and safety
  • Observe in the patient centered care of the family experiencing a cesarean delivery
